Yes, it is actually National Donut Day, or is it Doughnut Day?

I’m not really a donut fan per se, EXCEPT EXCEPT EXCEPT for the straight hot out of the oven cinnamon delights at Lakeside Diner in Stamford, at the foot of the Merritt at Long Ridge Road. I mean, you really can’t eat just one, or five – they are bite-size morsels of heaven.

If we pop into a Dunkin Donuts while on the road, Mr. EOS will go for the Boston Creme, I tend to grab either a cake plain or a glazed. As a kid I remember the Dunkin Donuts in Wilmington had a Dutch Crumb that was TEN times better than the Entenmann’s version out today, but those are decent too, dunked in either milk or coffee.


Then there’s the Krispy Kreme – never a fan, ever. To me it’s like opening a box of sugar and eating it with a spoon. They are way too sweet for my taste-buds.


Does anyone else remember the frozen cinnamon donuts from the 60s? Morton’s?? They were soooooooooooooooo good.

I tried making some once, the event was comedic, and one would swear they were made by one of my grandchildren – um, not. Baking was never my skill set.


But when in doubt for that special donut gift, how about the $100 24-karat Gold Cristal Ube Doughnut from Manila Social Club in Williamsburg Brooklyn? Nah, I’ll pass.


Okay, your turn. Donuts, yes or no? If yes, any brand? Flavor? Dunk or not? Swell, now that I’ve been talking about donuts, I could go for a glazed right about now – I hear DD is giving one free per customer!

  1. My favorite Duncan was whole wheat – way back in the 60’s 70’s. It was dense & not too sweet. No dunking – just as is. Krispy Kremes are the Wonder Bread of doughnuts – air & way too much sugar.

    1. Whole wheat donut????? I can’t even imagine. Sorry, sounds awful to me but then again I can’t stand whole wheat bread either. Or whole wheat pasta so my prejudice is built in. I’ll take your word for it that they were good.

  2. I got my free donut in town today at DD. It was packed. I always opt for the gooey goodness of glazed, dunked in coffee or milk. Mmmmm. I used to love DD creme filled (as compared to the Boston creme) but after eating just one my head was spinning from a sugar high. My son doesn’t let his children have sugar so they haven’t experienced the delight of DD. I might initiate them to the joys of sugar one time I have them alone!!

    We used to stop at Tim Horton’s along the road but I think they are all closed now.

  3. Here in Miami we have the award winning Salty Donut. They have concoctions that are mind blowing and sinfully good. My fav is their key lime pie donut. My wife prefers to keep her figure so she orders one of the 100 calorie donuts they have. I don’t. 🙂
