Named the Garden City of the World with a population of about 350,000, its most recent claim to fame, regrettably, is the September 2010 earthquake that hit at 7.1 on the Richter Scale. Photos of that in another post.
We had a full tour today, including seeing the US base for the Antarctica Program and the C-130s that bring scientists to and from the Antarctic. We went inside the International Antarctic Center briefly while it rained and saw New Zealand’s contribution to McMurdo Station.
Then up to the Port Hills neighborhood of Christchurch for a panoramic view out into Lyttleton Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. It was still a bit rainy and cloudy (we’re getting a complex that WE bring the cold and rain!) but we did not complain about what we saw.
