So THAT’S It – Gooba-Gooba-Gooba-Gooba

February 17, 2013

There’s an Asics running shoe commercial that plays at informerical hours with a 1950s song playing in the background.  I lay awake at night trying to put the snippet of the song in the ad with the whole song and just couldn’t get my brain cells together enough to come up with it.  I was forced to Google it.

But before I found it, I wasn’t actually sure how to phonetically ask Google to find it.

Eh eh eh o
scuba scuba scuba

Nothing.

Ay ay ay o
duba duba duba

It kept wanting to auto-correct and enter Dubai. I knew I didn’t want to go to Dubai, just find the lyrics and the tune for this song stuck in my head.

Nothing still.

Even entering the terms “sneaker commercial with 1950s song.” Was Google slipping or was I just not asking properly? I needed the old Magic 8 Ball.

Finally, some version of my scribble brought up this: Bingo.

Don’t You Just Know it, by Huey “Piano” Smith.

I challenge you to listen to this song and then tell me it’s not stuck in your head for a week. It’s etched in mine.

Gooba Gooba Gooba was just one of Smith’s fine lyric choices. I’m thinking he was sick often…..

There’s Rocking Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu

There’s Tu-Ber-Cu-Lucas and the Sinus Blues

There’s Don’t You Let me Take You on a Sea Cruise, might be the new theme song for recent Carnival passengers :-) . The song seems originally attributed to Huey Smith in his bio but maybe made popular by Frankie Ford, as it is he singing in the video below.

Hats off to Ted Barron from his blog Boogie Woogie Flu for the mp3 files I have used here. Many thanks Ted.

Now back to singing…………….

Ah ha ha ha (Ah ha ha ha)
Ey-eh-oh (ey-eh-oh)
Gooba-gooba-gooba-gooba (gooba-gooba-gooba-gooba)
Ah ha ha ha (Ah ha ha ha)
Ah ha ha ha (Ah ha ha ha)
Ey-eh-oh (ey-eh-oh)

Well, the Gooba, Gooba, Gooba lyrics reminded me of another song, but now I can’t think of its title! Seriously. I’ll report back tomorrow after I lay awake tonight. :-)

Actually, it just came to me! Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la, check-a-la romey in a bananika,
bollika, wollika, can’t you see, chickery chick is me! Why Gooba, Gooba, Gooba reminded me of that song remains a mystery!

Okay AA, your song? Sure you aren’t just making up words? I don’t know that one. I know the Name song. Amiable bo bamiable ba…..etc, but chickery chick? You pulling my leg?

Fun and funny, EOSr! I keep a Magic 8 Ball next to the phone and unbeknownst to a few “special” callers, I’ve had entire conversations with them referencing the 8 Ball. I just want to know if you’re going to buy the shoes. (No 8 Ball answer because I’ll know!)

OBTW, AA is right, I’ve heard that Chickery chick song before. We used to sing it when we were kids.

Found it. It was made popular by Dinah Shore. Sammy Kaye recorded it too. Can’t find a YouTube of her singing it but maybe someone else can. Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la.

I prefer a Ouija board by the phone than the Magic 8 ball. It means my conversations have to be on speaker so both hands can remain on the board but it answers far more questions. :-)

I’ll have to go look for that song. If two of you are saying it exists….

Thanks. I love Dinah. I’ll see if I can find it.

Scoooooore! Two points for Michigan. Thanks. But I still don’t remember it!!!!

This guy claims it was a hit in the 1940s. I think Dinah Shore might have sang (sung?) it, too. I used to sing it to my boys when they were little. Explains a lot!

congratulations on finding the song! Not one I’m familiar with…
When you can’t get a song out of your head its called “ear worm”

Ear worm? That’s a new use for that phrase for me. Makes sense but not something I would say in a conversation. Thanks.
