The Blizzard of 1978: Martha’s Vineyard
February 8, 2013
As we sit and wait for the Blizzard of 2013 to make a weather statement, I thought it would be fun to look back to February 6, 1978, what was billed as the Great Blizzard of 1978. I was living in Edgartown then, had bought my Chappy cottage but hadn’t moved in yet, and remember so well, as if it were yesterday, this post-storm walk through town…beautifully quiet….and white.
The white houses. The white church spire. The white snow.
I’ve run these photos before but I thought they were appropriate to run again today. For those in the path of the snow, stay safe and warm but above all, take photos and send them to me!

I remember it well too. Great photos. Thanks.
This makes me SO wish I were on the Island — even in the path of Nemo!! I am totally committed to spending a whole year on MV once in my life… I just adore the place! Keep safe and warm this weekend, EOSR!!
I don’t know if you read the Vineyard Gazette online Betty but do so today; lead story is the house out at Wasque still trying to be saved.
From my days living there, only one or two friends have remained. The Vineyard is gorgeous but it can take its toll when there year-round. But a great place to go when you are ready to write the great american novel we all know is in you.
Fabulous! I wish it would snow here!
I am happy to send a box of some of the many inches that accumulates here to your home. It’s coming down fairly heavily now. Pretty.
Portland has only had really substantial snow twice in my 48 years. I loved it when I was in college and then living in Boston, especially on Beacon Hill, so beautiful.
Very beautiful snow, EOSr. I noticed you posted two photos of cleaned streets. Were you messaging that it was a time when they had money to plow the streets?
More likely that most guys in town had plows on their trucks and did a little free work to get out of the house. This was also around the time of the gas crisis on the Vineyard.
I remember that blizzard, too, EOS. I was living in Stony Point, New York. We were trapped for days, and neighbors were actually talking to each other.
Great story. Stony point got hit hard last night too. Maybe some of those nice neighbors are still around to help each others. They will need it.
We woke to a good two feet this morning but miracle of miracles, no power outage.
