Beautiful Botswana

January 18, 2013

We’re just back from a trip to Botswana. Oops, no, that’s a lie. Just having a Lance Armstrong moment.

WE didn’t go to Botswana, but reader Brit did with her family and we are the lucky beneficiaries of her camera!

Brit says:
We saw these wild dogs hunting; the dog has the head of an impala which it would not leave, all the others in the pack wanted it but he kept it for himself!

The Kalahari lions are much larger than the others in Africa. This is apparently because when shooting was allowed in Africa the hunters always shot the biggest males thus leaving the smaller ones to mate and carry on the line. This did not happen in the Kalahari as it was too far away for the hunters to bother with. Kalahari male lions are spectacular with black manes.

Brit adds: the government in Botswana is doing a really good job with conservation, and promoting eco touristm. They don’t suffer from as much poaching as elsewhere.

Gorgeous photos Brit, and thanks for sharing them here.

UPDATE: Reader Luke Gardner just sent this to me with the commentary “I dunno, the Serengeti has some big boyz too.”

Brit. What splendid photos. With all the fabulous countries in Africa for safari, how did you decide upon Botswana? Were you looking specifically for a country with less poaching or was it a specific game preserve that attracted you?

Our kids are a bit too young yet for this adventure but we are always looking for good travel advise. Any thoughts you want to share on how you selected this destination would be read enthusiastically.

EOS, funny Lance Armstrong reference. Did you watch the Oprah interview?

EOS, please promise us you indeed just had a Lance Armstrong “moment,” and you’re not in the midst of a Lance Armstrong decade!

I didn’t watch the interview last night because the guy infuriates me so much. I’ll probably peep at the coverage of it today, though … most likely in public somewhere, so I’ll be too inhibited to curse and throw things.

Brit, what wonderful photos. I join Catherine in hoping you’ll give us some recommendations on finding and choosing a trip like this.

You’re too funny EOS. I believed you … but perhaps Botswana will be your next trip!
Brit your photos are wonderful. Wow that lion is magnificent!

I watched both Parts One and Two of the interview Betty, underwhelmed by Armstrong’s lack of remorse; also underwhelmed by why Oprah was duped into thinking this was a worthwhile interview. I thought she was smarter than that. I think Oprah got used.

Dear All, so glad you like the photos. My youngest child lives in Cape town, so we went to spend a week with him and then scooped him up and the older daughter and headed out on safari. My husband grew up in Malawi and we have been to Kenya several times so wanted something different. I have always wanted to go to the Okavango delta and it did not disappoint. We booked through a uk company ATR travel and they were excellent. They used Kwando Safaris in Botswana. We flew in and out of the camps and they were all four star but also eco friendly. My husband tells me its not the same as just rolling out your bedroll and sleeping on the ground but # 1 daughter and I are city dwellers who need our creature comforts!!

by the way, love the Serengeti lion, he looks much more like the Kalahari guys, the Okavango lions were much smaller.
