WAY Too Close For Comfort
January 11, 2013
A five-alarm fire last night in SoHo, only a block away from our youngest. The street is still blocked off today, police have someone in custody for what they believe to be arson, and sadly, one person died in the fire.
City dwellers more than most know how critical it is get out of a burning building and last night my daughter and her roommate were very glad they did not have to put to practice their knowledge.
Our fireman son firmly believes no New Yorker should live on a floor higher than the hook and ladder can reach. Of course, realtors don’t want you to know that, or even think that, as how would all those gorgeous apartments with views sell for the millions they do?!

Hey, I not only heard about that fire, I saw one of your photos tweeted in either Fox 5 or News 4 New York. She sent pix to you and you tweeted them?
Glad she’s safe. I’m with your fireman son. Give me a third floor apartment over a 33rd floor apartment any day. Not that we could afford to live on the 33rd floor in the city anyway – moot point.
Scary story. Give me hurricanes over fire any day. Three cheers for those firemen. Glad daughter is safe.
Likewise, so glad your youngest is safe. I would never consider living in a city as I am totally a country girl but even when we travel I feel much more comfortable if we are in a lower floor of the hotel. Great pics. I guess she got it from her mother!
That is terrifying! I never think about fires, but when I saw that fireman on the roof, silhouetted against the billows of smoke, it gave me chills. So glad your daughter is safe … and hope they take the arsonist to court for murder! xoxoxo b
Betty: Fortunately there were enough witnesses to the crime, and enough people heard the man who set the fire argue and run away, the police got him in a hurry. All for the good.
Yikes! I’m so glad your girl is okay.
Maggie: Thanks. She is too! She said she can still smell the lingering smoke.
I would never live in a high rise after seeing “towering inferno” luckily my daughter only lives on the 7th floor
Brit: I can’t remember how high the hook and ladders go but 7 sounds reasonable to me. Smart daughter.
