Step Away From The Meat Case. Put Down That Steak. Keep on Moving.

meat

EOS is going vegetarian. No more standing rib roasts. No more lamb chops. Wait, really, no more lamb chops? Might have to think this out a little more!

Anyway, I think going without red meat is a good thing. We don’t really eat much of it anyway. We’re more chicken and fish people and always always tons of veggies, so going without meat won’t be much of a stretch…..for me. Not sure Mr. EOS is fully on board with this plan. He loves his veggies too but he also likes to have something on the plate that requires using a sharp knife!

So, at the market today, it was all about the broccoli, peppers and cauliflower, leeks, kale, zucchini and yellow squash.

Buying lots of veggies is the norm for me so I didn’t go out of my comfort zone, until I got to the tofu aisle!!

  1. There’s Sprouted and Non Sprouted.
  2. There’s Tofu Plus.
  3. There’s Regular, Firm, and Soft
  4. And then there’s silken organic, and lite silken organic.

I closed my eyes, reached into the display case, and came up with ….TofuPlus Organic Firm, the blue faced container above. Don’t ask me why I chose that one. I am Clueless About Tofu.

I’m not really a tofu fan unless I am at an Asian restaurant and it’s in some soup or dish. In other words, when someone else is cooking it! I’ve bought tofu a few times before, making at the most one meal with it then letting the rest sprout and turn green in the fridge. I won’t make any promises how often this container will get used.

Side note: Mr. EOS’s foot is firmly in the NO TOFU for any reason camp.

Tonight, Mr. EOS is out, so I plan to concoct a recipe from my old book, Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. It’s called Stir-Fry Broccoli  Mushrooms, and Peppers with Caramelized Tofu. [Dawg just ran into the other room].

Please, step away from the tofu. It’s not only an estrogen disruptor, it’s the most genetically modified food on the planet. Choose nuts, or mushrooms instead!

    Happy New Year, btw!

Really???????????????/ My estrogen doesn’t need any more disrupting. So how on earth does tofu get away with being aligned with the whole foods healthy foods genre? Tell me more.

Even the name “tofu” isn’t appealing! The veggies looked good though.

We’ll be offering you a gift certificate to this place on Monday 1/14, now that they are NOT closing this old establishment. (you’ll be wanting beef in a week!)

    Hi,
I wish you luck with the vegetarian food, I for one will never give up my meat, I love steak, sausages, rissoles on the barbie, and I know my husband would never go without meat either, of course lamb tastes great bar-b-qued. :D

Listen to us, your smart readers. There is no good reason to be a vegetarian. And Martha is spot-on (as usual). Tofu is awful for you, especially as a woman.

Tell SB you will accept his kind offer of a gift certificate. Beef. Good. Lamb. Good. Pork, Good. Tofu, as Nature says, with a name like that, what’s to love?

Catherine, Martha, Sound Beacher, Mags, and Nature are all right. I’ll be home for dinner around 6. I’ll take two lamb chops with my veggies, thank you very much!

The Japanese eat tons of tofu and they have the longest life expectancy in the world. Of course, they also eat raw octopus.

    Okay, never mind.

BB: My grandmother never ate tofu and lived to be 101 – and a healthy 101 at that. I gave it a whirl last night, despite Martha’s insistence that I put it away. I am happy to report it tasted awful and ruined my otherwise great dish of veggies! So, long story short, The Great Tofu Experiment is over.

    Read this: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/12/04/soy-dangers-summarized.aspx

One serving wont hurt you, but you don’t want to eat it regularly…

Bronxboy-raw octopus is great, but they don’t actually eat much tofu. Average Asian only eats two teaspoons daily, and its mostly fermented or as a condiment-not a meat replacement.

Martha: Are you available for weekly nutritional consultations? You are the Resident Expert here, hands down. Thanks for the soy link. Here are two back, not defending soy per se, but from places whose information I consider solid and without an agenda: Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic

I just bought firm tofu and I’m going to learn to make S&P tofu b/c there is a vegan place here that makes it and it is one of my most fave foods ever. Going without red meat? Um, I don’t think I have it in me!

There was a run on Kale this weekend. I couldn’t find any anywhere. Has there been a kale incident?

I checked out those links. I think (I am not a debater by any means), like the main stream media, conventional medicine is highly corrupt/biased. Big pharma and big agriculture (don’t let my husband hear me say this) have been highly profitable industries and they do not want to let go of their antiquated (not right for humanity) business model. They spend a lot of resources to get politicians on their side and keep them there to protect their profits, regardless of what is best for humans. Some other guys – who are more moderate than Mercola- are Gary Taubes, Mark Sisson (www.marksdailyapple.com) and Michael Pollan. When I make dietary choices I try to choose foods & preparation methods that humans have been using for hundreds of years (canola oil? No way! Olive oil, butter, bacon fat? Yes). Not that we don’t eat garbage/ junk now and then, but mostly it’s meat and veggies. Most current thought is beginning to admit that saturated fat has no correlation with heart disease, but Pfizer and other statin manufacturers are doing their best to slow it down.

Sorry I am sounding so gloomy. I have a case of the after Christmas blues and was just reading that our country is seriously considering minting a trillion dollar coin. Hence, I feel rather doomed. Did you say you had a stash of twinkles!? Haha:-)

Anyone interested in that TVP suff should try a little first instead of buying in bulk. Maybe I did something wrong in preparing it but I think it’s the best product out there to convert a person back to meat eating. I should have saved my money and just chicken fried some dirt.
