Thunder Soul, The Movie
Ducked into the Majestic Theater in Stamford today to catch a documentary that’s gotten rave reviews. I was the ONLY person in the theater at 2:30 and what a treat to be able to crunch on my popcorn as loudly as I wanted……..and ooooh, even leave my phone ON.
The movie was wonderful, paying homage to Conrad Johnson, nicknamed Prof by the 1970s band students he encouraged and trained to become State and Nationwide champions. Rather than regular band music, Prof added the Funk Factor, not only in the tunes but in the choreography and outfits.
It’s a very touching and uplifting documentary and worthy of your $10 ticket.
Of course, I got home with funk dancing in my head and went right to my stash of 33 LPs to play a few of my favorite funk classics. The Brothers Johnson song I’ll Be Good To You, one of my all-time favorites, and yes, my cell phone ringtone!!!

That’s YOU with the Brother’s Johnson cell phone ringtone? I am sure I heard that in Starbucks one day in Mount Kisco and I remarked to my sister, wow, someone has great taste in music. What a coincidence.
Saw this movie the day it came out in the city. I agree that it is very special and what a testament to ‘Prof’.
Saw this related article in the NY Post today – Sly Stone, king of funk, homeless. Sad.

Not playing in my city and probably never will be (I live in NoWheresVille) so I can tell you the entire movie is available online, on YouTube. It’s in several parts and is a bit tedious to see that way but if you live where it might not ever appear, online is better than waiting for it to come to DVD.
